What should you tell us about your roof in Guildford?
Three Guildford neighbourhoods are conservation areas: the Town Centre, Abbotswood and Onslow Village. Wherever your home is, tell us about roof alterations and any property-specific requirements you know about. Send views of the main covering and extensions so we can check the materials and access together.

In Guildford, what separates cleaning slate from red clay tile?
The covering does: in Guildford, natural grey slate suits hand removal or roof pressure washing, while plain red clay tiles are cleaned by hand. Charlotteville, the town's first suburb, begun in 1862, was roofed generally in natural grey slate, with plain clay tile around Sydney Road and Austen Road. Onslow Village, begun in 1921, has steep roofs of plain red clay tiles at 45 to 55 degrees. Some original slate in Charlotteville has been replaced with concrete tiles, cleaned by hand too.
Say which covering you have, and if it is original, when you ask for a quote.
| Type of home | Share of households |
|---|---|
| Detached | 25.1% |
| Semi-detached | 33.5% |
| Terraced | 13.6% |
| Flat or maisonette | 27.7% |
| Caravan or mobile home | 0.1% |
Why does moss favour Guildford roofs beside beech hedges?
Moss favours a Guildford roof beside beech hedges or mature trees because they keep it shaded and damp, and their leaves lodge on the tiles as they fall. Onslow Village has prominent beech hedges, green verges and mature trees along its curving roads. The village's steep roofs, pitched at 45 to 55 degrees, shed rain faster than low-pitched ones, which gives moss less chance to settle, though a slope facing north still stays damp for longer.
If a hedge or tree stands close to your roof, photograph the slope beside it and the gutter below, then send them with your quote request.
Which cleaning method suits your roof?
Your roof can be cleaned by Moss Men Surrey using manual moss removal or roof pressure washing (hot, low-pressure steam). The team checks your roof covering, its condition and access before recommending either method.
| Service | Which roofs it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Manual moss removal | Manual moss removal suits concrete tiles, clay tiles and natural slate. The covering and its condition decide whether scraping is right for your roof; product-specific manufacturer advice can rule it out. | From £599. |
| Roof pressure washing | Roof pressure washing suits natural slate and modern clay tiles, once the team has checked the covering, its condition, access and the manufacturer's guidance. | Starts at around £750, depending on the roof; written quote within 24 hours. |
What does manual moss removal include?
A roof cleared of moss by hand, from £599, also gets its gutters cleared, Pureseal Bac Clear Pro and a three-year moss-free guarantee.
The biocide is the treatment we apply after removing moss.
Ridge tiles, hip tiles, valleys, verges and gutters are checked on every roof. Ridges are the top joins, hips are the sloping joins, and verges are the roof edges.
If our team damages your roof while cleaning, the repairs are included. Existing defects are considered separately when the team looks at your roof.
Artificial slate can look worse after cleaning. We discuss that risk with you before any work.
We never cold call; we check for nesting birds and bats first and stop if we find them; we check cement slates for asbestos before any work.
