What should you tell us about your roof in East Grinstead?
If your East Grinstead home is within the town's conservation area, tell us about any requirements that affect the roof. You can also explain which older details or finish you want to retain. Send photographs so we can judge the covering's condition and discuss a suitable cleaning method.

Is East Grinstead's Horsham stone cleaned like tile?
No: clay tile takes moss removal by hand, while Horsham stone falls outside both of Moss Men's methods and is looked at before anything is offered. In East Grinstead's historic centre, Horsham stone roofs every building from before 1800 and clay tiles are used for other roofs and for tile hanging, with hipped and half-hipped forms, many gabled dormers and tall brick chimneys.
If your roof is Horsham stone, say so first, and for a tiled roof send a photo that shows the dormers and hips.

Why can East Grinstead's gill woods encourage moss?
Because a roof shaded by trees offers the shady, damp conditions in which moss tends to flourish, and a network of woods fills the gills flanking the town. Steep-sided wooded valleys fall away to the south of the town's sandstone ridge, and in the centre, mature plane trees line the lawn outside Sackville College, with pollarded limes along the south-west end of the High Street.
If your house stands above a gill or beside a big tree, photograph the roof slope on the wooded side.
Which cleaning method suits your roof?
Your roof can be cleaned by Moss Men Surrey using manual moss removal or roof pressure washing (hot, low-pressure steam). The team checks your roof covering, its condition and access before recommending either method.
| Service | Which roofs it suits | Price |
|---|---|---|
| Manual moss removal | Manual moss removal suits concrete tiles, clay tiles and natural slate. The covering and its condition decide whether scraping is right for your roof; product-specific manufacturer advice can rule it out. | From £599. |
| Roof pressure washing | Roof pressure washing suits natural slate and modern clay tiles, once the team has checked the covering, its condition, access and the manufacturer's guidance. | Starts at around £750, depending on the roof; written quote within 24 hours. |
What does manual moss removal include?
Hand removal from £599 means moss off, gutters cleared, Pureseal Bac Clear Pro sprayed and a three-year moss-free guarantee.
The biocide is the treatment we apply after removing moss.
Ridge tiles, hip tiles, valleys, verges and gutters are checked on every roof. Ridges are the top joins, hips are the sloping joins, and verges are the roof edges.
If our team damages your roof while cleaning, the repairs are included. Existing defects are considered separately when the team looks at your roof.
Artificial slate can look worse after cleaning. We discuss that risk with you before any work.
We never cold call; we check for nesting birds and bats first and stop if we find them; we check cement slates for asbestos before any work.

We had a great experience with this company. They kindly rearranged their schedule at short notice to fit us in while the utility company had the road outside our house closed — which was essential as our roof can only safely be cleaned when the road is shut due to how close the house is to it. That flexibility was hugely appreciated.
They did a very thorough job and used a low-pressure air cleaning method rather than jet washing, which we understand can damage roof tiles. After the cleaning they also applied a biocide treatment, and the work comes with a 3-year guarantee.
The roof already looks much better and we’re looking forward to enjoying a moss-free roof for the next few years. Professional, knowledgeable and very accommodating — highly recommended.Read Giles Forrest's review on Google -

The Moss Men, comprising of David and his team of two arrived punctually and were respectful of our property and surroundings. They worked diligently throughout the day clearing up mess continually as they progressed with the job of clearing moss off of our roof which had been untouched since the house was built in 2000!
The removal of all the moss was successful and we are now waiting for the Biocide treatment used to complete its cycle which can take up to 12 weeks to see the real difference. But the moss has stopped falling off our roof which is just what we wanted!
We were not looking forward to having the job done although it needed to be desperately but the professional way the work was carried out made the whole experience much better than anticipated!!
We would have no hesitation recommending The Moss Men to friends and family!Read Lauri Myers's review on Google
