How is moss taken off Cranleigh's clay tile roofs?

By hand: the traditional plain clay tiles here, many of them made locally on Ewhurst Road from 1860, take the hand scrape, and steam is kept to natural slate and modern clay tiles. Older roofs carry mellow brown-orange tiles with handmade hog-backed ridges, and slate sits on the shallower pitches; natural slate can take either method. A few prestigious buildings, the church among them, are roofed in Horsham stone, which neither method covers.

Let us know whether your roof is clay tile, slate or Horsham stone, and send a photograph if you are unsure.

How might Cranleigh's mature trees affect roof moss?

They can shade a roof, and a shaded roof that stays damp is where moss tends to flourish. Cranleigh has many mature trees in gardens and public spaces, most notably the avenue of Norway maples along The Common, with limes and oaks around the cricket green. The Common's trees and shrubs reach into the village from the north, and the old railway banks along the Downs Link have mostly grown into woodland.

If your house faces The Common or the Downs Link, photograph the roof slope on that side and add it to your enquiry.

Which cleaning method suits your roof?

Your roof can be cleaned by Moss Men Surrey using manual moss removal or roof pressure washing (hot, low-pressure steam). The team checks your roof covering, its condition and access before recommending either method.

  • Google review,

The results of the work done by Dave and his team on our house in Oxted have been excellent. The roof looks so much cleaner with all evidence of moss nowhere to be seen, and biocide carefully applied to across the whole roof. The way they clean does not damage the structure of the underlying roof felt or alter the positioning of tiles, so we were very pleased to see the cleaning process undertaken with care and concern for our roof and tiles. The guys doing the work were very courteous an took the time to clean up at the end of the process. Would definitely recommend!
