Does pressure washing damage roof tiles?

Yes, pressure washing can damage roof tiles or force water beneath them. Identify the covering and its condition, then check the proposed method against the relevant manufacturer guidance.

Can pressure washing damage roof tiles?

Pressure washing can damage a roof. Tile finishes, existing defects and the way water reaches the roof all matter, so a pressure label cannot establish that a method is safe.

How can pressure washing harm tile coatings and let water in?

Pressure washing can wear tile coatings and push water beneath the overlapping tiles. A roof with existing defects needs those defects looked at before cleaning is considered.

What do manufacturers say about roof cleaning?

Manufacturer advice depends on the tile, and it differs on both scraping and pressure washing.

Some manufacturers advise against scraping or pressure washing their clay tiles, because both can damage the tiles. Other manufacturers advise that a trowel or stiff brush can remove moss from their roof tiles, and that a pressure washer, if used, should be set to low pressure and pointed down the roof from the top.

Moss Men Surrey checks the guidance for your own tiles before choosing the method. Where it rules out scraping or pressure washing, that method is not used on your roof.

How does hot steam differ from cold jet washing?

For roof pressure washing (hot, low-pressure steam), we use water heated to about 150°C at 50 to 60 bar, applied downwards. We never use a cold jet wash. These are our own working settings; the team checks each roof, including its manufacturer's guidance, before using them.

These settings describe our service. Manufacturer guidance and a look at your own roof still decide whether the proposed work is suitable.

When should roof cleaning be declined?

The proposed cleaning should be declined or postponed if the covering, defects, access or product guidance makes it unsuitable. A repair concern may need attention first, or a sound roof may be left alone.

If our team damages your roof while cleaning, the repairs are included. Existing defects are considered separately when the team looks at your roof.

The Moss Men did a fantastic job on our roof. It looks amazing now. They also did a brilliant job in tidying up the fallen moss. They were very polite and respectful too. Communication was excellent. I would definitely recommend them.
